"The short answer is: No, _____ did not *have* a soul; but _____ *was* a soul.
You first have to understand what a soul is. Consider the creation of mankind:
Genesis 2:7
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Notice that man was not *given* a soul, but that he *BECAME* a living soul.
A soul, according to the Bible, is a body with the Breath of Life in it.
The Bible even calls animals souls.
Revelation 16:3
And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.
The Bible says that in death itself, mankind has no advantage over animals:
Ecclesiastes 3:18-21
I said in my heart, “Concerning the condition of the sons of men, God tests them, that they may see that they themselves are like animals.” For what happens to the sons of men also happens to animals; one thing befalls them: as one dies, so dies the other. Surely, they all have one breath; man has no advantage over animals, for all is vanity. All go to one place: all are from the dust, and all return to dust. Who knows the spirit of the sons of men, which goes upward, and the spirit of the animal, which goes down to the earth?
So therefore, ______ was a soul.
God did not give us souls, but we ARE SOULS.
Furthermore, souls are not immortal. For it is written:
Ezekiel 18:4 - the soul that sinneth, it shall die.
Only God is immortal:
1 Timothy 6:15-16
He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power.
We are not immortal, as many may claim, but we will receive immortality at Christ's second coming. If we are already immortal, then we would not need to receive immortality at the second coming; but the fact is, we are NOT immortal.
1 Corinthians 15:51-54
Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality"
