Coquette 1929, SAM TAYLOR 4/10

Hysterical, implausible and precious—if those strike you as neutral adjectives, know that I'm typing them with a sneer. Mary Pickford should have kept her yap shut. At 76 minutes it's maddeningly overlong, spending an hour establishing how cute and earnest Pickford is, and the balance of the runtime posing an incredibly uninteresting moral question. I understand the abject malaise critics felt at the time about the sudden dominance of the talkies. They were BAD, and at worst they were kind of GROSS. I've only seen one really good talkie from 1929 so far, and that was The Letter. But the stuff I really love is just around the corner... bring on the stock market crash! Bring on the Depression!

Admit it, you are in love with Rita Hayworth!!!!! :wuv: (a redhead you're not in love with, impossible!!!!!)

Borderline 7.5, but it deserves the bump up :)
Rita might just be the only redhead I'm not in love with... in fact, the one time I really enjoyed her was as a blonde in Lady from Shanghai!

The sort of thing is a bit easier to take when you're in the midst of a crush, but even so...

Have you seen My Best Girl with Pickford? One of her later silents, she's certainly lovely in it, and a limitlessly charming film I think.

I thought about a 3. Below a 4 however says something in my system and in the end Coquette may be too innocuous to merit that. But the movie made me feel gross, and that feeling persists. It may be on its way to a 3. Yuck.

You should watch good silent movies, you'd like them!

@ Jake -- I'm trying to figure out which version of the book to read. Apparently there are three and the film is based on the second, which is impossible to find without spending a lot or getting a really beat-up used copy, it seems. :(

But if you are finding the third/usual version is great I think I can go with that.

Ohhh, Ally, he is SO hot, how did you not stick around if only to regard 3 hours of his immense, unfathomable sexiness? Oh my god, I need to get me a manly, sensitive gamekeeper.

This is great news to me! I won this really beautifully packaged DVD of Lady Chatterly, but was never interested in the film; until now! *thumbsup*

Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince 2009, DAVID YATES 6.5/10

Hips, Hips, Hooray! 1934, MARK SANDRICH 6/10

Gold Diggers of 1933 1933, MERVYN LEROY 8/10

You Belong to Me 1941, WESLEY RUGGLES 4/10

The Ghost & Mrs Muir 1947, JOSEPH L MANKIEWICZ 7.5/10 -- I wish they'd ratcheted the angst level way up so that rad-as-hell ending would have had more of an impact on my girlish notions.

Yes, she looked great! 1941 was totally her year. She & Hank were still good together, despite the material.

I was torn about Miss Manton, I've seen it before but was in a mood to see it again, but Muir was just starting on Fox Movie Channel. I'm not sorry I went with the latter after all, and I think I have Manton downloaded somewhere. It's a lot of fun!

I have Muir in my collection. Definitely a no brainer when it comes to choices but I hadn't seen the Stanwyck film before so I went for the first experience rather than the more than enjoyable repeat.
