Joy of Living |

Another quasi-musical scored by Jerome Kern, fast-paced and a bit more successful in maintaining its comedy, and somewhat undervalued among the Golden Age classics. Douglas Fairbanks Jr, a philosophical hedonist, attempts to teach Irene Dunne, a classy and serious Broadway star, the “joy of living” and get her to leave it all behind. It’s lighthearted and nonstop, great escapist cinema for the times, and features what I would cite alongside Irene’s best performances (particularly for an extended, drunken sequence through Manhattan nightlife). |
