The plot of this film is among the all-time greats for preposterousness… Drunk playboy is inadvertently responsible for a great doctor’s death. He woos the doctor’s widow, getting her into a car accident which blinds her for life. Learning about a philosophy her husband lived by, that doing good deeds without letting anyone know about it or ever being repaid will give you everything you need in life (the eponymous magnificent obsession), he continues to court her and take care of her, eventually proposing marriage; she falls in love with him, too, even after she finds out who he is, but doesn’t want to be a burden so runs away for six years. He becomes a great doctor himself within six years, hopes something he does finds its way to her even if they never know it; eventually he tracks her down, performs an operation, she can see, and they live happily ever after. Yeeees… and still I was affected by it, and still I liked it. These movies have gone to my head, I think.
